National Portrait Gallery (NPG)

The National Portrait Gallery (NPG) aims ‘to promote through the medium of portraits the appreciation and understanding of the men and women who have made and are making British history and culture, and to promote the appreciation and understanding of portraiture in all media’. It holds the most extensive collection of portraits in the world.

NPG is an executive non-departmental public body, sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media & Sport.

Directions

1. Step-free access

  • via the Orange Street ramp entrance and the Gift Shop entrance.
  • The Heinz Archive and Library entrance is located on Orange Street opposite the ramp entrance.

2. Underground

  • Nearest stations: Charing Cross 230 metres, Leicester Square 195 metres, and Embankment 490 metres.
  • Please note these stations do not have a lift.

3. By rail

  • Charing Cross station 320 metres from the St Martin’s Place entrance.

4. Bus

  • Bus numbers 24, 29 and 176 from Trafalgar Square stop C or Charing Cross Road stop K.

5. Car, taxi or Dial-A-Ride

  • No parking facilities at the Gallery.
  • Visitors can be dropped off at the ramp entrance on Orange Street via Haymarket.

6. Bicycle parking

  • Opposite the main Gallery entrance on St Martin’s Place and behind the National Gallery’s Education Centre on Orange Street.
  • Please note: the National Portrait Gallery Cloakroom does not accept folding bicycles. Folding bicycles can be stored at Charing Cross Station Left Luggage.

Admission prices

  • Entry to the building is free of charge.
  • Ticket prices for special exhibitions throughout the year.
  • Concessionary rates for Disabled visitors and free for their carers.

Christmas and New Year’s opening hours

  • Closed from Saturday 24 December – Monday 26 December 2016 and reopen on Tuesday 27 December 2016.
  • Close at 18.00 on Saturday 31 December 2016.
  • Close at 18.00 on Sunday 1 January 2017.
