How to and where to obtain a birth / adoption certificate in UK?

To obtain a birth certificate, you need to register a birth in UK.

What are the procedures to get a birth certificate?

    • You should register the birth within 42 days (6 weeks) of the birth date.
    • You need to make an appointment with the register office (a place where the baby delivered or any other register office) to register your baby  birth by post or in person. You can also apply online from the General Register Office.* If you register the birth at the place where the baby delivered, you will get a certificate fast otherwise it will take a few more working days.
    • You can use a register office to:
      • register a birth, death, marriage or civil partnership
      • find records of a birth, death, marriage or civil partnership (if it was registered at that register office)
      • order copies of certificates.

Documents required to register for the birth in UK

Check here what are all the documents you need to bring at the time of registering a birth (you can still register a birth if you are unable to provide these documents).

  • NHS red book or discharge summary sheet
  • Proof of your identity (e.g. passport, driving licence or birth certificate)
  • Proof of your address (e.g. driving licence, council tax bill, utility bill)
  • Marriage or civil partnership certificate (if applicable)

During the registration of birth, you may be asked for the

        • place and date of the baby’s birth
        • name, surname and gender of the baby
        • parents’ names, surnames and address
        • places and dates of parents’ birth
        • date of parents’ marriage or civil partnership
        • parents’ jobs
        • mother’s maiden surname
        • whether the mother has been married more than once
        • the number of children the mother has.

  • Proof of your address (e.g. driving licence, council tax bill, utility bill)
  • Marriage or civil partnership certificate (if applicable)

During the registration, you may be asked for the

        • Adopted person’s forename and surname
        • Adoptive parent’s forename and surname
        • Date of Birth of Adopted Person
        • Court that made the Adoption Order
        • Date of Adoption

Cost of obtaining Birth Certificate | adoption certificates at UK

There are 2 types of birth certificate:

  • the short version, which contains only the baby’s details
  • the full version, which also contains the parents’ details

You can buy a short version or full version of birth certificate for your baby, after you have registered the birth.

Cost of registering a birth: Free.

Cost of getting short version or full version of birth certificate: £11

Standard service: £11

Priority service: £35

For any corrections to be applied in a birth certificate, you need to pay a non-refundable fee of £75 or £90
