How to reach Downview Prison by Train, Bus & Car?

The prison is located at Marshgate, near the centre of Doncaster and within walking distance of the train and bus stations.

A taxi from the bus or train station will cost approximately £5.

If travelling by car, the Visitors Car Park can be found on the right as you approach the prison.

  • Junction 36, take the A630 Doncaster/Rotherham Road towards Doncaster and follow the signs for the town centre
  • Follow signs for the railway station
  • Pass the railway station on the left and go through the tunnel under the French Gate Centre
  • Take the first left as you exit the tunnel over the bridge
  • HMP & YOI Doncaster is signposted from there
  • Junction 32, take the M18
  • Exit M18 at junction 3 toward Doncaster town centre
  • Follow signs for the railway station
  • Pass the railway station on the left and go through the tunnel under the French Gate Centre
  • Take the first left as you exit the tunnel over the bridge
  • HMP & YOI Doncaster signposted

Visitors instructions to enter Doncaster Prison, UK

  • Children under the age of 18 can only visit if accompanied by a parent or legal guardian
  • Visitors should arrive 30-40 minutes before their visit is due to start.
  • The last entry will be 15 minutes following the planned start time, if visitors arrive after this entry will be denied.
  • Visits are closed on Bank Holidays including Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day, Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
  • Personal belongings put in a locker in the Visitors Centre or left locked in their vehicle. Visitors will need a £1 coin for the locker. This is refundable.
  • Before the visit an officer will tell the rules. If you break, your visit will be cancelled/banned from the next visit.

  1. Prisoners will be allowed 2 x 60 minute visits per calendar month
  2. The prisoner will book the visit using the ATM
  3. An automated confirmation message (that a visit is booked) will be sent to the visitor(s) if their mobile number/email address is registered.
  4. Prisoners who are reverse cohorting cannot book a visit in their first 10 days.

  • Letter of introduction on their firm’s letterhead. Include:
  1. Full name of legal visitor
  2. Full name of individual being visited
  3. Signature of legal visitor’s line manager

How to send money and gifts/parcels to the prisoners at Doncaster Prison?

  • Send  money to prison free and fast online service 
  • Postal orders and cheques should be made payable to “Serco Limited” with the senders name and address clearly written on the back of the cheque or postal order, along with the prisoners name and number.
  • If you are unable to use a computer, smart phone, internet or do not have a debit card, then apply for an ‘exemption’ to send money through the post
  • Allowed by Limited parcels.
  • The parcel must be clearly labelled with what’s inside and include the person’s name and prisoner number on the parcel.
  • All parcels will be opened and checked by officers.
  • Property can only be handed in on a booked visit, no property will be accepted if there is no associated visit booked.
