Who are eligible for / Who will get Cost of Living Payment 2023 in UK?

You can get up to 5 payments to help with the cost of living, if you’re getting certain benefits or tax credits. No need to apply and paid automatically in the same way, if you’re eligible.

What are the Low income benefits and tax credits Cost of Living Payment in 2023 – 24?

You can get any benefits or tax credits on certain dates, if you entitled to up to 3 Cost of Living Payments in UK. The payment will be made separately from your benefit payments.

Who is eligible for £301 Cost of Living Payment?

Universal Credit

You are eligible for the first Cost of Living Payment of £301 if you were entitled to a payment (or later found to be entitled to a payment) of Universal Credit for an assessment period that ended in the period 26 January 2023 to 25 February 2023.

Income-based JSA, income-based ESA, Income Support and Pension Credit

You’re eligible for the first Cost of Living Payment of £301, if you’re entitled to a payment (or later found to be entitled to a payment) for any day in the period 26 January 2023 to 25 February 2023. If you are entitled to one of these benefits for any day during this period but you do not receive a benefit payment because your entitlement is between 1 penny and 9 pence.

Tax credits

You are eligible for the first Cost of Living Payment of £301 if you received a payment of tax credits for any day in the period 26 January 2023 to 25 February 2023, or you are later found to have been entitled to a payment for this period.

Who is eligible for £300 and £299 Cost of Living Payment?

After updating the qualifying dates for the £300 and £299 Cost of Living Payments, they will be announced. when they have been announced.

When you will not be eligible (Nil awards) for Cost of Living Payment in UK?

“Nil awards” are referred if your benefit is reduced to £0 for the qualifying period and not eligible for the Cost of Living Payment.

Reasons for reduced to £0, if you:

  • Got more than one payment of earnings in your Universal Credit assessment period
  • Earnings went up for you or your partner’s
  • Your or your partner’s savings went up
  • Getting another benefit
  • You got a ‘sanction’ if you did not do something you agreed in your claimant commitment

You may be eligible / applied for a Cost of Living Payment even reduced to £0:

  • Money taken for other reasons (payments of rent to your landlord or for money that you owe).
  • Hardship payment if you’re unable to pay for rent, heating, food or hygiene needs.

When the payment will be paid, if you’re entitled?

  1. DWP benefits: £301 paid between 25 April 2023 and 17 May 2023
  2. Tax credits and no other low income benefits: £301 paid between 2 and 9 May 2023
  3. During autumn 2023: £300 paid for most people
  4. During spring 2024: £299 paid for most people
  5. Paid by HMRC: If you’re getting both Child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit, you will receive a Cost of Living Payment for Child Tax Credit only.
  6. Paid by DWP: If you’re getting tax credits from HMRC and a low income benefit from DWP, you cannot get a Cost of Living Payment from both HMRC and DWP.

If you have received a Cost of Living Payment, but we later find that you were not eligible for it, you may have to pay it back.

Disability Cost of Living Payment

From 20 June 2023, 6 million people in the UK who get disability benefits will automatically get a one-off £150 payment. This payment is to help with the rising cost of living and higher disability related costs such as care and mobility needs. To get the Disability payment, you must have

  • Attendance Allowance
  • Constant Attendance Allowance
  • Disability Living Allowance for adults
  • Disability Living Allowance for children
  • Personal Independence Payment
  • Adult Disability Payment (in Scotland)
  • Child Disability Payment (in Scotland)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment
  • War Pension Mobility Supplement

For disabled people on a low income, the payment of £150 comes on top of other Cost of Living payments, such as:

  1. £301 (automatically paid in May)
  2. £300 (paid in the Autumn).

The Disability Cost of Living Payment is assessed on an individual basis.

When will you receive the Disability payment?

You’ll receive payment £150 Disability Cost of Living Payment automatically between 20 June 2023 and 4 July 2023. If you not received, you may report from 5 July 2023. Payments will be made to people who were getting a qualifying disability benefit from DWP and Ministry of Defence.

How can a Pensioner get 2023 Cost of Living Payment in UK?

You can receive the full amount of Winter Fuel Payment (which includes the Pensioner Cost of Living Payment)  for winter 2023 to 2024, if you’re born before 25 September 1957.

You will get an extra £150 or £300 paid with your normal payment from November 2023. A letter will be sent to you in October or November telling you how much Winter Fuel Payment you’ll get if you’re eligible.

If you had one of the following payments (can’t see it in your bank, building society or credit union account), you can report a missing Cost of Living Payment here. You can report the same missing payment not more than one time. If you’re entitled, your payment will be paid automatically.

  • Disability Cost of Living Payment: £150
